Warning over proposal to ‘nationalise’ medical aids for NHI in South Africa

Lee Callakoppen, principal officer of the Bonitas Medical Fund, has warned against any suggestions to use medical aid reserves to help fund South Africa’s upcoming National Health Insurance (NHI).

Callakoppen said that some form of universal healthcare is imperative in South Africa as it is not sustainable to have only 16% of the population on private medical aid.

However, he cautioned that a proposal by the Health Professions Council (HPCSA) to use the current private medical aid reserves, of around R92 billion, to fund the NHI is not the answer – saying it is irresponsible and the group strongly opposes it.

Bonitas is the second biggest open medical scheme in South Africa with 336,000 members, and 720,000 beneficiaries.

Acting health minister Kubayi-Ngubane takes aim at fake news

Acting health minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane has cautioned about the spread of fake news regarding Covid-19, saying false information makes it harder to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Speaking on SABC News, Kubayi-Ngubane urged citizens to double-check messages they receive and not fall victim to false information.

“When SA heard about level 1, people started thinking Covid-19 is gone. It is not gone. It is still here and we have to make sure we protect ourselves,” said Kubayi-Ngubane.

“There is a lot of fake news that goes around. Some people say, 'Because I have had Covid-19 previously, I will not get it again.' This is not true. Others think, 'Because I have been vaccinated, I will not get Covid-19.' That is also not true.

Johannesburg - The Tembisa 10 story is not fake news but a cover-up of mammoth proportions by Gauteng Health authorities, Independent Media said on Wednesday.

After initiating a private investigation into the birth of the 10 babies, the media organisation said it stood by the stories published in both print and online publications.

Last Tuesday, IOL broke the story written by Piet Rampedi of Gauteng mother Gosiame Thamara Sithole giving birth to a world record set of decuplets at a Pretoria hospital on Monday, June 7. This was followed on Wednesday with a lead story in Pretoria News, written by Rampedi, its editor.
