RE: SAMA Tygerberg Statement
The South African Medical Association (SAMA) has noted with concern the alleged unfair dismissal and suspension of three doctors at Tygerberg Hospital.
The doctors were accused of theft after obtaining verbal permission to remove two broken hospital chairs from the premises in order to arrange for their repair. The chairs were immediately returned and remain at the hospital.
The version of events as reported raises several questions about the fairness of the disciplinary process, and the overall reasonableness of the treatment the doctors have been subjected to.
Public sector doctors in South Africa are under immense pressure and provide invaluable care to the communities and patients they serve. Healthcare Managers should strive to create pleasant work environments for doctors and other healthcare professionals employed at their facilities. We believe it is important to care for staff so that they can care for their patients.
SAMA will be writing to the management of Tygerberg Hospital to seek clarity regarding the matter and to ask that they re-investigate the circumstances surrounding the dismissal and suspension of the three doctors with a view to ensuring a more just outcome.
SAMA urges all its members to bring any similar alleged unfair treatment to the attention of the Office of the Acting General Manager through emailing VusumuziN@samedical.org
Yours sincerely
